  1. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the Lee Family. Dr. Boon Lee was a kind and noble colleague, full of appreciation for life. When I first met Dr. Lee, I was working in a school district and he offered a great deal of assistance. Later we had the opportunity to work together at the ISBE. His laughter could fill a room. Many a time he would find the positive side of a situation and makes me smile.
I know that he will be missed, and will be in my thoughts and prayers.

  2. My deepest condolences in this time of sorrow and loss. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

  3. Boon was a wonderful friend and a respected colleague. His kind ways and melodious laugh will remain in my memory as will his curiosity about the world as shown in his many trips to far-flung places. I enjoyed our time together on bike rides, visiting fish ponds, and talking about gardening. He worked hard at his responsibilities at the Illinois State Board of Education, yet his work was very much behind the scenes and thus not known well in the larger Illinois educational universe. This is unfortunate as he helped shape policy and the implementation of policy for children across the state. But those of us who knew him will miss him greatly. Rest in peace, my good friend, and angels receive your gentle soul.

  4. I consider myself lucky to have known Boon. He was a kind, gentle and compassionate friend. As a colleague, I could always rely on Boon and I could trust that he would do his best and be concerned about all who were involved. I will miss all that, but most of all, I will miss his wonderful contagious laugh that never failed to let us see the brighter side of things. My condolences for his family.

  5. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. My Boonie as I affectionately called him at ISBE, was such a kind and beautiful person as well as a joy to be around. Boon had the most contagious laugh that you couldn’t help laughing yourself. I kept in touch with him through emails and relaying messages through Seng (who I constantly asked him how is my Boonie doing?). God has sent his angels and called you home to take your place in heaven. Rest and Sleep in heavenly peace My Boonie. I will miss you more than you know.

  6. My deepest sympathy to Boon’s family. Boon was a well respected, kind and wonderful colleague. He was dedicated to his family and his work. I could always count on Boon to provide helpful advice without harsh criticism. I will miss our conversations about family and life over a good meal after our meetings at ISBE. Thank you for your time among us and rest in peace, my friend!

  7. My condolences to Boon’s family and friends. He was a wonderful person to work with. While I only worked with him for a short time, he was always helpful and knowledgeable. He was also a great co-worker. We had some lunches where he would share a bit about those wonderful trips he took and would talk about the strangest foods he’d ever eaten. In my family, he is a bit legendary and was known to me by name 8 years before I began at ISBE, as he signed the DS-2019’s for my friends and partner. They all said he was so kind and interested that they were having a great experience. We have missed him here over the past couple years and will continue to remember and miss him.

  8. Boon’s technical assistance to teachers and administrators in the field have positively impacted second language acquisition through the years. May your memories be eternal!

  9. I’m very sorry to hear this news. Have not seen Boon for over 45 years. Ron Chung and I coached Boon when he was on the Chinese Christian Union Church basketball team as a teen. We called him “The Panther” because of his speed and graceful movement with a basketball. He was a very nice guy and well liked by his teammates. My condolences to his family and friends.

  10. Boon was a colleague of mine for several years at ISBE. He was kind and thoughtful to his co-workers and the districts he advised. He was a good monitoring companion and a good friend.
Boon had a great sense of humor and a distinctive laugh. He will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.

  11. While I come back from Iowa and tried to chat with Boon again, I find this shocking news that Boon is no longer with us. I met Boon back in 1988 when I started my first few years in the U.S. Boon taught me a lot of things. Boon was always a special wonderful friend in my heart. My deepest condolences for Boon’s family.
