Caroline Wilcox Gifford

Catherine M BeckerCaroline W. Gifford (nee Wilcox) age 92, of Bethlehem Woods, LaGrange Park, formerly of LaGrange.  Beloved wife of Dr. Edgar D. “Ted” Gifford; loving sister of Bill Wilcox (Cleveland), devoted mother of Anne (Jerry) Umbarger and Dr. Blair D. (Ann) Gifford; and, cherished grandmother of Dr. Mark (Stefanie) Umbarger, Michael Umbarger, Kelsey (fiancé Scott Casper) and Taylor Gifford, and loved by caregivers Vickie and Ruth.Caroline had a cheery disposition, a keen sense of humor, and was well liked by all.  She graduated as a voice major from Albion College.  After college, she was an outstanding singer and performed throughout Chicago.  Also, she was a school teacher at Cossitt School and a very active community leader in LaGrange.  She was the first Curator of the LaGrange Historical Society.  Caroline was a Regent in the Daughters of the American Revolution, a Board member at Plymouth Place, and had long term involvement with Delta Gamma Sorority, Allied Arts, Questers, the LaGrange Garden Club, the LaGrange Architectural and Heritage Commission, and a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow.  Visitation will be held on Monday, October 17, from 5:00 p.m. until  8:00 p.m. at Hallowell & James Funeral Home, 1025 W. 55th St., Countryside, where a  chapel service will be held  on Tuesday, October 18, at 10:00 a.m. The interment will follow at Bronswood Cemetery in Oak Brook. In lieu of flowers, memorials should be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Illinois Chapter, 8430 W.
