It is with great sadness that the family of Roger Stephen Johnson announces his passing on Friday, November 2, 2018, at the age of 83. He was born on June 19, 1935 to Melvin and Erma (nee Christensen) Johnson. Roger graduated from Bradley University, and married Dorothy Shirley Johnson on August 25, 1956. Roger devoted his career to education at Lyons Township High School, first as a teacher and basketball coach, and later in administrative roles, retiring after more than 30 years of service. His career was devoted to education, but his life was dedicated to family. Roger loved spending time surrounded by loved ones at his north woods cottage. He will be fondly remembered by the many students who called him “Coach,” by the many people who called him friend, and most of all by those who were lucky enough to call him family. Roger will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy, his children, Jenny Olesuk, Jan Johnson, Stephen Johnson and Jodi (Todd) Kummer, his grandsons, Christopher (Megan) Olesuk, Kevin Olesuk, and Nicholas Johnson, his brothers, Ronald (Judy) and Kenneth (Gina) Johnson, and his nephews, Jeffrey, Gregory, and the late Chad Johnson. Visitation will be held 9:00 am until time of Funeral Service 11:00 am on Friday, November 9, 2018 at Hallowell & James Funeral Home, 1025 W. 55th St., Countryside IL. Interment to follow at Bronswood Cemetery, Oak Brook. Memorial donations given to the Alzheimer’s Association are appreciated. Service Info 708-352-6500
Roger was principal at LT South Campus when I was a new teacher and I always found him to be an educator who was always interested in the students and they’re lives at LT. He was a treasure and will be missed.
Thank you for the kind words. It’s very nice to see people who knew my grandpa through the years talk about him.
Just learned of this. Played for Rog in 65-66 and always wished I had kept in touch.
Best (belatedly) to his family.
I spent my childhood waiting on Mr. Johnson to get up north every summer! He was a kind and wonderful man. I remember thinking the cabin was the most amazing wonderous place to explore and play in and around every summer. Rodger let me fish, swim, and live on his dock during those years! And Chris! My playmate from back in the day. You were my best friend all those summers. I was always excited to hear that little mini bike start up and watch you cruise the trails. Those were good days, simpler times. Rest well Mr Johnson!
