Raymond E. Lang, proud U.S. Army veteran and a distinguished resident of LaGrange Park, IL, peacefully departed on January 5, 2024, at the age of 89. Born on September 4, 1934 in Chicago, IL, Raymond was the beloved son of John and Mary Lang.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Margaret, and leaves behind his legacy through his daughter and son-in-law, Belinda (Frederick) Daly, as well as his son and daughter-in-law, Andrew and Dana (née Sweis) Lang. Raymond’s memory lives on through his five cherished grandchildren: Zachary Daly, Michael (Brianna) Lang, Flynn Daly, Briana Lang, & Jordan Lang, along with his great-grandchild Ember Lang.
He graduated from Loyola Academy in 1952. He earned his BS in Mathematics and Statistics, including 24 college credit hours of physics and chemistry, from John Carroll University. He earned a certificate in Nuclear Engineering through the International Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering at North Carolina State University and Argonne National Laboratory in 1958. He also continued his education through University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. As a lifelong learner, Ray participated in many training courses in Hanford Waste Designation Course, DOE Environmental Laws and Regulations, the Department of Energy Project and Program Management series, Nuclear Reactor Safety Courses at MIT, National Environmental Policy Act Course, and many courses in nuclear material measurement, control, statistics and nuclear security.
Raymond’s commitment to knowledge continued through his postgraduate work at US Department of Energy, Chicago Operations Office, Environmental Programs Group, Argonne Illinois: Senior Program Manager/Environmental Engineer. Responsibilities included program/project management for radioactive, mixed, and hazardous waste management and environmental restoration activities. Throughout his career, he was Program Manager for many programs within the DOE regarding Nuclear Material Management and Safeguards. Ray was employed with the US Department of Energy from 1956-1997. Raymond lead a successful career with the Atomic Energy Commission as an Army Officer. His dedication extended over 20 years, achieving the rank of Major and completing assignments, including a significant tenure at the Pentagon.
His military career included his time as Major, US Army Reserve (Retired Reserve); Transportation Officer and Aircraft Maintenance Office, and Active duty, 1958 (6 months) and 1961 (11 months). In his Reserve Time 1956-1976, he was assigned as a Mobilization Designee to the Office of the US Army Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics, Washington DC (Pentagon). Raymond Lang’s contributions to science and service will be remembered fondly.
Raymond is deeply loved by all his family and friends. He will be greatly missed, but mostly remembered for his wit and caring nature.
The family would also like to thank the special caregivers at Hinsdale Hospital who made Raymond’s final journey peaceful and calm.
A Funeral Mass will take place at 11am on Saturday, January 13th at St. Francis Xavier Church, 124 N. Spring Ave., La Grange. Interment to follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside.
