Mary Cecilia Elwood Tio

Mary Cecilia Elwood Tio, age 91, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2024 in La Grange, Illinois. Mary was born on August 26, 1932 in Williamsburg, Iowa to Lambert and Dorothy (nee Hansen) Elwood. She attended Williamsburg High School and graduated from Marycrest College, Davenport, Iowa and the University of Iowa, Iowa City where she completed a dietetic internship and earned a Masters degree in foods and nutrition. She was a pediatric dietitian at the University of Iowa Childrens Hospital in Iowa City until she moved to Chicago and joined the nutrition department at Hines VA Hospital, Hines, Illinois.

 

On May 7, 1960, she married James Tio and they became the parents of two children. They made their home in Broadview, Illinois until 1974 when they moved to LaGrange Park, Illinois. James preceded her in death on August 19, 2009.

 

Mary is survived by daughter Jennifer Tio, son Thomas (Christina) Tio and four grandchildren Samuel, Henry, Benjamin and Caroline Tio. Also surviving are sister Cecilia Rae Elwood, brother Michael (Carolyn) Elwood, sister-in-law Susan (late Richard) Elwood and many nieces, nephews and friends. In addition to her husband James, she was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers James (late Eunice) and Richard Elwood.

 

Visitation 3pm to 6pm Sunday, July 7 at Hallowell & James Funeral Home, 1025 W. 55th St., Countryside. Chapel prayers 9:15am Monday, July 8 at the funeral home, processing to 10am Mass at St. Francis Xavier Church, LaGrange. Interment to follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Francis Xavier Parish (sfxlg.com) and Friends of Fisher House–Illinois (fofhil.org).
