Thomas R. Kammer affectionately known as Tom, passed away peacefully on November 27th, 2024 in his cherished home in Downers Grove, Illinois. Born on April 1, 1935 to John and Pauline Kammer in Madison, Wisconsin, Tom lived a life rich in love, family, and professional achievement.
Tom graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, a degree that would lay the foundation for a remarkable career in the news industry. Over five decades, Tom distinguished himself as a television news anchor, radio personality, and later as a cameraman and mini cam operator. His career took him around the globe, covering news stories that shaped the world. His investigative team won an Emmy in 1985.
In 1956 Tom married Sheila Margaret Maloney, with whom he shared 57 wonderful years. Together they raised two sons, Jeff (Laura) and Keith (Linda), who blessed them with six grandchildren: Matthew (Jennifer) Kammer, Sarah (Josh) Veal, Morgan (Jay) Rains, Chase (Emma) Kammer, Jacob Kammer and the late Zachary (Jessica) Kammer, and eleven great grandchildren: Madisyn, Kolten, Kaden, Nolan, Ella, Chance, Reece, Sybil, Margaret, Walter and Quinn. After Sheila’s passing, Tom found love again with Norma Cannella, whom he married in 2016. Norma was his devoted companion for the last eight years of his life.
Tom’s passions extended beyond his professional life. He was an avid tennis player and fisherman, and he relished time spent with his family. Tom also enjoyed music and played his trombone through his college days. Later in life he was the pianist at the 7am Mass at Divine Savior Parish in Downers Grove for over thirty years. After joining St. Scholastica Parish, Tom and Norma sang in the choir for 8 years. He also enjoyed going to concerts and singing with the Joyful Voices choir. A loyal fan of the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Cubs, Tom enjoyed cheering on his favorite teams.
Thomas R. Kammer will be remembered for his dedication to journalism, his love for his family, and his zest for life.
