Walter T. Johnson

Walter T. Johnson was born on July 22, 1951 and passed away on December 10, 2020.  He was the proud and beloved father of Kevin and Ryan Johnson and third son of the seven children of the late Joseph and Rita (nee Madigan) Johnson; brother of Joe, Bob, Denise (Jeff) Beste, Dave (Diane), Carl (Karen), Nora (Pat) Murphy; uncle of many nieces and nephews.

Walter had a Master’s Degree in Education and taught for 34 years before retiring in 2007 from Pleasantdale Middle School. Walter truly loved teaching, and led many students through their middle school math and history classes as well as Stock Market and Geography Bee competitions.

“There’s no word in the language I revere more than ‘teacher.’ My heart sings when a kid refers to me as his teacher, and it always has. I’ve honored myself and the entire family of man by becoming a teacher.” – Pat Conroy

A memorial service will be held in the Summer of 2021.

Arrangements entrusted to Hallowell & James Funeral Home, Countryside at 708-352-6500.

    1. I know Walter really loved Pat Conroy. I love that quote as well. The Water is Wide was an especially inspirational book. L Wishing you well, Joe. You were a dear brother to Walter.

  1. Walter started teaching at Pleasantdale Middle School the same year I did in 1980. Patti and Walter became friends with my husband and me. He will be missed.

  2. Mr. Johnson was a great teacher and wonderful role model for his students. I will always remember his kindness when I had health issues and our son Grant was in his class.

  3. Sending my condolences to Kevin and Ryan, Patti, and the Johnson family. Walter “Wally” started at Pleasantdale the same year as Brent and me (and Deb, Betty and many others; 1980!). We shared lots of good times together. Infamous staff parties, dancing and celebrations! Wally was full of life and was a favorite among staff and students alike. His passing leaves a hole in our hearts. Rest well now, Wally.
