Rosemarie Hughes

Rosemarie Hughes, 83, of Downers Grove.  She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Richard D. Hughes, her sons, Richard A. and Kenneth, her grandchildren, Kristy and Derek Hughes, and many nieces and nephews.  Rosemarie was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Marie Plasil, and her brother, Charles J. Plasil.  She started working at age 15 at the Wards Catalog store in Downers Grove.  After graduating from Downers Grove North High School, she worked at Prudential Insurance.  In 1967, as she was being trained to be office manager there, she and her husband started a Crane business, where she ran the business end for over 40 years.  Even though she worked full-time, she always found time to volunteer.  Starting as a member of the Downers Grove Junior Women’s Club, for a few years in the early 1970’s, she was secretary of the Downers Grove Drug Abuse Council.  Eventually, she joined the Downers Grove Women’s Club, becoming club president for two years, and then First Vice President of the Fifth District GFWC.  She was also in charge of compiling a cookbook of the club members’ recipes as a fundraiser.  She also volunteered for a few years in the CCD office at St. Joseph Church, Downers Grove.  After retiring, she became a foster mom to many litters of kittens to be adopted.  Tireless and youthful almost to the end, she will be missed by her family and friends, and her cats, Tiger and Eddie.  Visitation 3 to 9pm Monday, January 30, 2023 at Hallowell & James Funeral Home, 301-75th Street, Downers Grove, where Funeral Service will be held at 10am on Tuesday, January 31, 2023.  Interment Clarendon Hills Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Feral Fixers, Lombard or Catnap, LaGrange Park appreciated.  Funeral home phone 630/964-6500 or www.hjfunerals.com
