Mark Alan Tupy, 64, of Downers Grove, IL, passed away in his sleep on July 26th after losing his 30+ year battle with cancer.
Mark was born on February 28th, 1959 to Walter Tupy & Marjorie (Bullerman) Tupy in Chicago, IL. After Mark graduated from James B. Conant High School in 1977, he went on to study Civil Engineering at Purdue University.
After graduating, he started his career at Northern Illinois Gas (now Nicor Gas, a Southern Company Subsidiary) as a Station Design Engineer, kickstarting a 42-year career with the company where he held various engineering and management positions throughout the years, until his death.
In the fall of 1979, Mark met Catherine “Cathy” Albrecht while they were both students at Purdue. Mark and Cathy were married in June of 1982 and went on to have two sons, Michael (“Mike”) Christopher and Matthew (“Matt”) John.
Even after graduating from Purdue, working full time, and helping to raise a family, Mark continued his pursuit of knowledge. He went on to obtain his MBA in Econometrics and Statistics from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business (1990) and an Associate’s Degree of Science in Application and Technical Support (2012) which allowed him to earn his Project Management Professional (PMP) certification in 2014.
Through the years, Mark was a lover of all things science but focused on astronomy, physics, and software development. When he wasn’t learning, he spent his time: listening to jazz, playing chess online, collecting model trains, dice, movies, vinyl records and gadgets, and loving his 4 grand dogs.
Mark was predeceased by his grandparents and parents. He is survived by his wife, Cathy; sons, Mike and Matt (Hannah Gassmann), sister, Patricia (Bradley) Turner, and many nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held at Hallowell & James Funeral Home at 301-75th Street in Downers Grove on Sunday, July 30th from 3 PM – 9 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Advocate Charitable Foundation President’s Fund for Special Needs, Good Samaritan Hospital or Advocate Hospice at https://www.advocateaurorahealth.org/foundations/where-to-give/.
