We sadly announce the passing of Joseph Shanley, 74, a longtime LaGrange-area resident, who died November 30, 2024 following a valiant battle with cancer. Mr. Shanley was born Chicago, IL on June 13, 1950. He was one of eight siblings born to the late Dorothy and William Shanley.
He was the beloved husband of the late Joyce. Mr. Shanley is survived by a son, Ryan (Kara) Shanley, and was the stepfather of Michael (Diana) Huber and Daniel (Jackie) Huber. He was the devoted “Papa Joe” to his grandchildren, including William, John “Jack”, Winifred and Kathleen Shanley, as well as Ronnie and Viera Huber and Sammie and Francesca Huber. He was the dear brother of Mary Ann Shanley, the late William (Jean) Shanley, Marge (Mark) Sebern, Kevin (Deborah Darr) Shanley, Edward (Peggy) Shanley, Maureen (Tom Smith) Shanley and Patricia (Gary) Reidy. He loved and was loved by his many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Shanley resided in Westchester, IL until the family moved to LaGrange, IL in 1955. He was a proud member of St. Francis Xavier Parish and attended its grade school. He attended Quigley Preparatory Seminary in Chicago and Benet Academy in Lisle. He graduated from St. Ambrose University in 1972.
Mr. Shanley had wonderful wit and wisdom and an incredible memory of events with family and friends. Nothing mattered more to him than family and nothing was more special to him than Shanley family get-togethers and the frequent times he spent with his friends, who were both numerous and close-knit. He lived a full and joyous life and brought joy to those fortunate to be around him.
Visitation for Mr. Shanley will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, December 9, 2024, at the Hallowell & James Funeral Home, 1025 W. 55th Street, Countryside, IL. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, December 10, 2024 at St. Francis Xavier Church, 124 N. Spring Avenue, La Grange, IL. Please meet at church. Interment will follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside.
