Mary Kay McGorey
Mary Kay McGorey (nee Hogan), 85, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2017, with loving family by her side. Beloved and devoted wife of Tom for 63 years. Mary Kay and Tom grew up on the same block on Chicago’s West Side, raised their family in Bellwood and retired to Burr Ridge. Her Catholic faith was a cornerstone of Mary Kay’s life. She and Tom were actively involved in their parishes – St. Mel, St. John Chrysostom and St. John of the Cross. Mary Kay was a long-active member of the ACCW and, for the past 37 years, a supportive partner in Tom’s ministry as a Deacon. Cherished mother of Katie (Tom) Watson, Margie (Chuck) DiGangi, Pattie (John) Bomher and Dr. Thom (Janice) McGorey. Adoring Grandma of Jeannette (Josh), Brian (Heather), Kim (Joey), Dan (Cecily), Jon (Brooke), Amy; Rob (Erin), Erin, Christine (Matt); Sean, Kevin, Patrick; Kelly (Mike), Meghan and John. Loving “Gma” to Keenan, Avelyn, Madilyn, Moriah, Isaac, Gianna, Joey, Michela, Adriana and Charlotte. Dear sister of Bob (Sandra) Hogan and sister-in-law of Margaret McGorey and Jack Dolan. Loved by many nieces and nephews, dear friend to Karen (Ron) Ziemba and countless others whose lives she touched. Preceded in death by her loving parents, Bob and Edith Hogan. A lifelong Cubs fan, glad to see a World Series Championship “after all the waiting we had done.” All who knew Mary Kay were blessed to have her in their lives. She always knew the right words to comfort or cheer others. No one was a stranger, just a friend she hadn’t yet met. She lived her life with an “attitude of gratitude,” exuded a joy for life and loved to sing and dance. Mary Kay’s family is grateful for the loving and compassionate care provided to her by the staff at Belmont Village (Carol Stream) in her final months and Northwestern Medicine Hospice in her final days. Visitation will be held at Hallowell & James Funeral Home, 1025 W. 55th Street, Countryside on Thursday, Feb 2 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. On Friday, Feb 3, friends and family will gather at the funeral home at 8:30 a.m. and a Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at St. John of the Cross, 5005 Wolf Road, Western Springs at 9:45 a.m. Interment will follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery. Our deepest sympathy to Tom and his family. We have fond memories of Mary Kay from the Diaconate. She and Tom were our first interviewers and touched our hearts with their strong faith , commitment to each other and to the Diaconate.

Very sad at the passing of my beloved Aunt, sister to my father Robert E. Hogan Jr. Many of my earliest memories are associated with Mary Kay (and Tom). Wishing Tom, Katie, Margie, Patty and Tommy love from my whole family to theirs. Wish I could be there with you at this difficult time. She was a loving and supportive figure into my adulthood, and I’ll appreciate her kindnesses to me always. She’ll be eternally missed.

My deepest sympathy to the McGorey family. Mr. McGorey was kind enough to coach us in grade school basketball for three years and Mrs. McGorey was always right there with him. She made countless contributions to our Catholic school and church. Kind is the word that comes to mind when I think of her. I will remember her fondly.
