David Johan Aul, age 99, died on July 26, 2017 at Our House Senior Living in Rice Lake, Wisconsin.
David was born to David and Dora (nee Felder) Aul at their Chicago home on March 21, 1918. He was the eldest of 8 children. He was preceded in death by his wife of 75 years Margaret Helen (nee Bensen) Aul, as well as all but one of his siblings.
As a young man, David ventured from Chicago to work in the Civilian Conservation Core in Oregon. He then worked for 30 years as a machinist for International Harvester in Melrose Park. He met his wife Margaret in Chicago and was married in September of 1940. The two of them raised their four children, David, Gloria, Thomas, and Jerry, in the Melrose Park home that they purchased and lived in for 70 years.
David remained active in his worker’s union for many years as a volunteer after retiring. He enjoyed family gatherings and the antics and accomplishments of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren as they grew up. He was a devout member of Apostle’s Lutheran Church and then St. John’s Lutheran Church in La Grange before moving to Rice Lake WI following the death of his wife in 2016.
At his assisted living home he was known for his cheery and dependable “Good morning everyone” greeting as he wheeled his walker into the dining room each day at breakfast. He enjoyed going to church with his son Jerry and his wife, visits from out-of-town family, and regular social visits by hospice volunteers. He often expressed his desire to join his wife, and he felt her presence daily as he waited.
Survivors include sister Mary Silcox, David and Margaret’s four children, daughters-in-law Pauline and Melissa, son-in-law Walter Olms, eleven grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren.
A visitation will take place from 9:30am until time of service, 10:30am at St. John’s Lutheran Church, LaGrange. Interment at Mount Emblem Cemetery, Elmhurst. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to St. John’s Lutheran Church. Funeral info: 708-352-6500
