Phyllis Marie De Trana

Phyllis Marie De Trana, of River Forest and more recently Hinsdale, passed away suddenly on May 15th.    Phyllis lived a life full of love, accomplishment and fun, shared with many over 88 years.  She grew up in the Austin area of Chicago, with her brother Allan and parents Martin and Marie (nee Vail) Stearns.  She became a registered nurse and through this healed across the nation as a nurse on Santa Fe Railroad, and across the street at St. Anne’s Hospital, where while attending to the sick she met her life-long love, the late Dr. Frank De Trana.

Phyllis and Frank prospered in leaving behind seven children, 14 grandchildren, and one great grandchild (with many more expected): Frank (Brenda) De Trana, Celestine De Trana, Philip (LeAnne) De Trana, Carlotta (Tom) Fey, Michael De Trana, Francesca (Randie) Barrows, and Regina (Brian) Hinrichs.  These have prospered in turn with their own offspring: Frank (Kristy Carlsen) and Alex De Trana, Christian and Michael Heiligenstein, Maria and Evan Matney, Philip and Matthew De Trana, Virginia, Alex, and Loretta Fey, Mia De Trana, Austin Barrows, and Brian Hinrichs; and leading the next generation is their grandson Frank and Kristy (Carlsen)’s daughter, Ava.

Also remaining behind is her beloved sister-in-law, Patricia Stearns, and many nephews, nieces, and many more great nephews and nieces.

She has made and maintained a wealth of friendships over the many chapters of her long life, including her nurse’s training, years of childrearing in Oak Park and River Forest, on the guild of St. Anne’s Hospital and Oak Park Hospital, and her involvement in sailing and life on the farm in Marengo.  She will have the joy of joining many with her passing, while many other much-loved friends are left in grief and appreciation.

Phyllis came and left her mark on the world – a very positive mark, which will be felt as it continues through the many she touched while here.  Until we see her again, she will be mourned and missed.
