George Meyers, age 100, longtime resident of Countryside, IL for 61 years, has rose peacefully to eternal life on July 23, 2018. Beloved husband of the late Catherine; loving father of Scott (Susan) & Skip (Heather) Meyers; dear grandfather of Sarah, Steve (Cassie), Katie Meyers, Stacey (Aaron) Grappe, & Steven Meyers; fond grandfather of Hannah & Nick Grappe; uncle to many.
George was a proud WWII Navy – Seabee, and was in the 1st Battalion in the South Pacific. He welded fuel lines and built storage tanks for fighter planes. He was a rare holder of a 70 year UA pin from the Plumbers Local 130. He finished his plumbing career at the University of Illinois, Chicago.
He was the youngest of 13 children, and born in Carbon, Indiana before moving to Chicago, and marrying the love of his life. George and Catherine had 65 wonderful years together.
George was active in his community taking part in many activities which included: Boy Scout pancake breakfasts, parades, American Legion events, and Music in the Park. He was driving until the age of 99 when he decided walking was a better fit. In the years throughout his life, George enjoyed boating, fishing, golfing, dancing, and most recently, gardening and watching the hummingbirds.
George’s most favorite pastime, however, was spending time with his family, and the friends whom he considered family. He loved talking and visiting with his grandchildren, sharing stories, and babysitting his grand-pets. He loved traveling to Montana and Florida for vacations with his family.
He was loved by all that he knew, and he loved them right back. He was a kind gentleman with a warm heart, and always had a hug waiting for you. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and his Countryside neighborhood where he walked around the block most every day, stopping to talk to his neighbors.
