Dorothy Skwarek

Dorothy M. Skwarek (nee Derek), 91, died surrounded by family on October 20th.  Beloved wife of the late Louis Skwarek.  She is survived by four children; Ron (the late Mary Ann); Lynn Huck (Jim); Wayne (Toni); and Dave (Renee).  10 grandchildren were honored to call her “Busia”; Julie Stay (Nick), Victoria Hansen (Zak), Michael (Kate), Tony Huck (Juliana), Alison, Joe, Nick (fiancée Erica), Alicia, Lily & Matthew.  Dorothy was also blessed with three great-grandchildren Elizabeth Hansen, Colin Stay, and Anna Huck.

She lived most recently in Indian Head Park but her heart belonged at her lake cottage in Michigan.  Dorothy worked for many years as a bookkeeper, eventually retiring from St. Joseph Parish in Chicago.  As a mom, she volunteered as a Cub Scout den mother for many years.  “Dot” as she was sometimes called, loved a good party, cute shoes and a stiff Manhattan.  She married her high school sweetheart and celebrated 61 years of marriage before his death.  Dorothy stayed friends with her high school girlfriends “The Jivin’ Jills” throughout her life.

Despite some physical impairments in her later years, Dorothy continued to enjoy life.  With her wit and no-nonsense attitude, she was loved by all she met.  To join in the celebration of her life, visitation will be at Hallowell & James Funeral Home, 1025 West 55th Street, Countryside from 2 to 8PM on Sunday, October 27th.  Concluding prayers at the funeral home will begin at 10:15AM on Monday, October 28th.  Followed by the Funeral Mass at St. John of the Cross, 5005 S. Wolf Road, Western Springs at 11AM.  Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery.
