Emil G. Balz, age 101, of LaGrange; preceded in death by his beloved wife of 67 years, Waltraud Maria; loving father of Rainer Balz & Gabriela (Joe) Magats; proud grandfather of Matthew (Eryn), Karen Garcia, and James; Nicole, & Meghan; great-grandfather of Chiann, Jada, and Alex; uncle & friend to many. Emil was an avid reader, a lifelong learner, gardener, and biker. He began marathon training at age 62 after his retirement from Stillwater High School where he taught languages. He ran hundreds of races, several marathons, and was Minnesota runner of the year in 1989, 1991, and 1992, still holding 2 records in his age group. Although he ran his last marathon at 72, he continued to run and bike daily until age 93. His wisdom, inspiration, and guidance will be greatly missed by his family. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Greater Chicago Food Depository are appreciated.
