Doris Hullihan (nee Boughton), age 99, of La Grange Park, formerly of Riverside. Beloved wife of the late Edward Hullihan. Loving mother of John (Kelly), James (Regina), Ann (Jeffrey) Lee, Thomas, Michael (Kathy), Charlie (Michelle) and Christopher (Michelle) Hullihan. Devoted grandmother of Sean, Danny and Michael Hullihan; Kate (Brian) Gibson; Jesse, Molly (Brandon) Rios and Dora Lee; Kevin, Joe and Pete Hullihan; & Kyle and Kelly Hullihan. Cherished great-grandmother of Gigi, Grace and Conor Gibson. Doris was preceded in death by her brothers James and Robert Boughton. Fond aunt and friend of many.
Besides raising a large family, Doris enjoyed a distinguished career as a dietitian. She earned her B.S. from Rosary College and completed her internship in Rochester, MN before working as a dietitian at West Suburban Hospital, Hines V.A. Hospital and, finally, Loyola University Hospital where she ultimately became Director of Food Services. As a Director for the Cook County Heart Association, Doris was a staunch antismoking advocate and published several heart-healthy cookbooks.
In her personal life, Doris was known as the caregiver, taking care of aging relatives, young grandchildren, and neighbors in need. Doris volunteered for numerous organizations including Ronald McDonald House, the North Riverside Library, the Altar & Rosary Society, and Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed cooking for crowds and was particularly known for her apple kuchen and lemon meringue pie.
Even with her large family and busy career, Doris took time to have fun. Doris and Ed played a mean game of bridge in tournaments at St. Mary’s in Riverside. For years, their daily routine included a walk at Graue Mill followed by ice cream and senior coffees at McDonald’s. Doris was a prolific knitter, providing beautiful afghans, hats and scarves for many a fortunate recipient. She also shared Ed’s love of witticisms and, when asked to provide a palindrome for a 2002 party, she coined the immortal “Did I knit it, I tink I did.” After moving to Bethlehem Woods, Doris enjoyed long walks around the grounds and daily Mass in the chapel. In her final years, she was blessed with a loving caregiver, Ligaya Llanos.

My Auntie dearest may you rest in peace. I guess your hook for the rest of those cherry pies you promised.
What a life! Kudos to Doris and much love to all who loved her and will miss her. May you be blessed.
I fell in love with Aunt Doris the first time I met her at my wedding. What a wonderful lady! She will be missed.
I’ll remember my aunt for her selflessness, humanity, and sparkling sense of humor. These made her the exemplary family woman that she was. Special place in our hearts always.
Aunt Doris was the glue that bonded us to our late father’s family. She told me of the lifelong importance of relationships with cousins. I am grateful for her devotion to us. Indeed a stellar example of a multidimensional woman.
