David Johnston, age 77 of Chicago, Illinois died January 3, 2023. He was born July 9, 1945 in Oak Park and was confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church. David graduated from Lyons Township High School and from St. Olaf College. He served 5 years in the Army as an interpreter during the Vietnam war. After the war, he earned a master’s degree from the University of Chicago and worked for the Veteran’s Administration for his entire 40+ year career.

Music, faith, history, and education were very important to David. He generously supported many causes including Lutheran Summer Music, Valparasio’s music program and the Bishop Hill Heritage Association. David had a gift for language, speaking German, Polish, and even some Swedish later in life.

David will be dearly missed by family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Irene Johnston and great nephew Hudson and is survived by his sister, Christine; nieces Beverly (John), Whitney (Steve) and Valerie (Jim), great nieces Molly (Jory), Megan (Pat), and Madeline, and god-daughters Beverly and Bettina.

A memorial service celebrating David’s life will be held on January 9, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in La Grange, IL. The service will be available via livestreamed at Gracelg.org/live
