Florence E. Staege, age 88, of Indian Head Park & formerly of Cicero, passed away on June 26, 2024. Loving mother of Mark (Cheryl LeDuc) and Dan Mourlas; dear sister of Frank (Ruth Ann) Ayre; cherished aunt of four; Annette Ayre, Caryn Krueger (Keith), Heidi Van Eerden (Christopher) and Heather Overbeek (Mark); fond friend of many.

Her parents, Edgar and Daisy (Elliot) Ayre preceded her in death.

A reception at 10 am will precede a Memorial Service at 11 am on Friday, August 2, at Christ Church of Oak Brook, 501 Oak Brook Rd., Oak Brook, IL 60523. Interment private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Florence’s name to Karanda Missions Hospital, Zimbabwe, Africa (karanda.org) are deeply appreciated. Florence spent two vacations as a volunteer nurse at this hospital and fell in love with the people of Africa.

Florence graduated from Wheaton College’s Nursing program and spent her full career at West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park. She was a head nurse there for many years and finished her career at their pre- and post-natal clinic, where she enjoyed caring for mothers and their babies.

She was a preacher’s kid (PK) and grew up in the church. She was a great witness to Christ’s salvation and a prayer warrior. She enjoyed singing and was a choir member at each church she attended. Many times, she was an alto soloist in choir concerts. She also played the flute, piano, and organ. She was a faithful member of Christ Church in Oak Brook, IL, and, previously, Warren Park Presbyterian Church in Cicero, IL.

Since Florence was a PK and her father had many callings, she grew up in several church communities, including Iowa, Central Illinois, the Galena, Illinois, area, and Michigan.

Florence was also a great fan of the Chicago Bears. She held season tickets for many years and was able to attend the Super Bowl in 2007, but they lost, to her dismay.

She was passionate about travel and attended many Bears away games, including a trip to London, England. She traveled throughout the United States, Europe, and Africa. In her younger years, she often camped during her trips to the Western United States.

She was also an avid craftsperson. She always kept her hands busy with needlepoint, crocheting, and knitting. Many were fond recipients of her handmade treasured gifts.

She was also preceded in death by beloved aunts Violet (Horace) Chapman, Rose (Paul) Damen, Lilly Olson, Pansy Elliot, and Margaret (Albert) Robinson. All her aunts and mother were named after flowers since her grandfather was a professional gardener.
