Susan Marie Cycon

Susan Marie Cycon was born September 30, 1919, in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin; the only child of Charles and Maud Ermatinger.  She went home to God on December 13, 2024.  Sue is survived by cousins, Carolyn Paul McGrath (whom she regarded as a younger sister), Mary Tlachac, Sue Plahuta, John Mayer, Ann Tout and many dear friends including Mary Lou and Dan Rankin, who cared for Sue for many years as if she were their mother.

After a childhood spent in Chippewa Falls, she earned her degree at the University of Minnesota.  Following college Sue went to work in Minneapolis writing articles for the local newspaper.

Sue eventually left the newspaper to pursue a career as a stewardess for American Airlines.  It was during this time that she met and married Edward Cycon, a U.S. Air Force Veteran and a Captain for American Airlines. Sue happily cared for passengers for many years; she was recently spotted still proudly wearing her wings!

Sue and Ed married and together enjoyed an active life with their beloved dogs for 57 years until his death in 2005. Sue was an avid tennis player still playing doubles in her 80’s, while Ed swam daily. She was always adventurous and was known for being quite a horseback rider too.

Sue lived in her condo surrounded by photos of cherished family members as well as photos of her pets.  She enjoyed visits from out-of-state family members and from the many, many people whose friendships she cultivated throughout the years.

Many wonder what the secret of her longevity was; Sue always lived a life of moderation and was a kind, loving and humble person with a great sense of humor.

Sue was a founding member of St. John of the Cross Parish and was active in a church group for 60+ years that met weekly.  She was deeply devoted to her Catholic faith and prayed the rosary daily.

If it is true that each of us has that one guilty pleasure, Sue’s was chocolate; she enjoyed it daily!

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Hallowell and James in Countryside, Illinois.

  1. I met Sue 5 years ago, I was there for her 100th birthday. 🥰 I was one of her caregivers , well at least that’s how our relationship started. Soon after we became very fond of each other, we shared the same love for dogs and horseback ridding, but it was our passion for tennis that drew us near.
We’d sit on the balcony enjoying the sunshine and the occasional visit of Mama & Papa Duck and Ducklings that would swim by on the pond. We’d shared stories of our past, enjoying each other’s company so, that soon we became close friends. I started calling her “Big Sis” , her eyes would sparkle and she’d sweetly smile.
I’d tell her the story of how I fell in love with the “Handsomest Boy”of the school, and that if I would have had her as my “Big Sis” then…
“I would have Married that cutie”!.😊this
always managed to get a joyful laugh from her. I’ll miss every moment shared with you “Big Sis” 💧🙏❤️💫🕊️🙏
You will be in my heart forever 💖
    Love DiDi

I learned a lot from her, and I remember her often calling me “sweetheart”. I will miss you! Rest in peace my lovely lady Sue!
