August “Sonny” Drews

August “Sonny” Drews, age 79, of Indian Head Park, IL; beloved husband of Diane (née Holik); loving father of Doreen (Thomas) Currey & Timothy (Jane) Drews; proud grandfather of Ally, Emily, & Billy; dear brother of the late Dolores Drews & Thelma (James) Fleming; dear uncle and friend of many.
Sonny was born in Oak Park and grew up in Forest Park. He attended Proviso East High School and then served in the United States Air Force for four years. After the Air Force, Sonny worked in the trucking industry until he began working with sprinkler systems. He went on to become a successful owner of several sprinkler system companies over a span of 40 years.
Sonny had a passion for sports, and coached baseball and soccer when his children were young. He was one of the coaches of the Berwyn Blazers Soccer Club and was also the commissioner of the Norm Reissmann youth soccer league in Berwyn for a time. He had a fondness for baseball cards and other sports memorabilia which eventually led to him opening his own store, Park Cards, in Forest Park. Sonny was a lifelong Bulls and Cubs fan, and his favorite players were Michael Jordan and Ernie Banks.
In his later years, Sonny enjoyed traveling with his wife Diane (especially to tropical resorts), attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, and going to the OTB.

Doreen, the picture of your Dad is the Sonny we knew and loved. We enjoyed good times together and many laughs. He was always quick with a remark and always pleasant. He will be missed.
Deepest Condolences to your family. Sonny was clearly a man the left his mark on hundreds of people. Defended his country, started a business, employed friends, raised great kids, fulfilled a successful and loving marriage. He will be missed. His life is an inspiration of how it “should be”.

Dear Diane, Doreen, Tim and family –
So sorry for your loss. Sonny was a great man, and I’m so thankful I had a chance to see him again after many years. I will forever treasure my younger years of crossing the alley to play with Tim, take swim lessons from Doreen and always welcomed inside your home. May he rest peacefully and know that Rocky & him are having fun again together.
Thinking of you all with love,
Ricky Ruane and family – xo
